This program is for triathletes that wish to improve their open water swim times. There are 2 levels of program to follow.
Level 1: Level 1 swimmers will be athletes who are aiming for their first or second open water triathlon this season. Sessions start around 1800m and work up to 3000m.
Level 2: The level 2 program is for swimmers who are perhaps familiar with open water swimming and want to take their racing to the next level.
You will need:
a) swimming trunks / swimming costume, goggles, 2 x brightly coloured swim hats and a wetsuit (preferably a triathlon specific one).
b) we will be introducing SMALL hand paddles to develop your strength in the last 4 weeks of this program. For our purposes, paddles need only be 1-2 cm larger than your hand.
c) the commitment and availability to swim 3 times a week
d) Access to a 25 m pool and an open water swimming venue.
The objective of Block 1 is to develop some fundamental skills that are necessary for swimming in open water. These include some general points and tips about safety, positioning and what to do if you get in trouble. For Level 2 athletes the first block will concentrate on building some strength endurance, crucial for successful OW Swimming.
Level 1 swimmers will develop their bilateral breathing techniques and begin to think about the pacing strategies to employ on longer open water stretches.
Level 2 swimmers can expect the technical aspect of Block 2 to focus on improving your pacing skills and your sighting. The fitness focus will be aerobic conditioning, a really important part of any successful swim leg.
Level 1 swimmers will begin to think about sighting, and some simple racecraft such as start positioning and turning around buoys. This will develop while continuing to work on strength and bilateral breathing techniques.
Level 2 swimmers will continue to build their aerobic fitness whilst learning some valuable group drafting, turning and entry/exit skills.
